All I can say is that if you want unadulterated, unrestrained fun, you would find Punjabi weddings highly appealing. But those are discussions for another day, not appropriate for this blog post. Yes, critics sometimes call Punjabi weddings ostentatious, gaudy or sexist. There is melody in music and a lot of heart and fun in the dance steps. Unlike other Indian marriages, in Punjabi weddings you would find even the elderly letting their hair down and enthusiastically taking part in different types of events and engagements along with the youngsters. The moment you set your foot inside the venue, you would be greeted with warm and friendly welcome, sweet sounds of laughter and also gossip (ahem!) and guests flashing million dollar smiles. You would also find scintillating display of dancing skills and constant exercise of the vocal chords. There is a dazzling array of colors on display, beautiful ladies decked up in designer lehenga-cholis and heavily embroidered sarees and handsome gentlemen in sherwanis and expensive branded suits. You would never find the mood sombre even at such a solemn occasion. I will discuss their wedding rituals to establish my point. Only that they are probably a bit more expressive than some of the other Indian ethnic races.
Are they a fun-loving race? Yes, but so are most of us. “ Punjabi Hindu weddings are loud and extravagant.” Really? This is a common perception that the world has about them.
